43rd #SatSunTails

Welcome to the #SatSunTails microfiction competition.

Be warned – the prompts aren’t easy, but that’s so you can write to the best of your ability.

If you haven’t had a go before at this writing challenge, then please don’t hesitate to try this weekend.

Rules!

  • Post stories in the comments
  • Stories must be 150 words (margin of 5 words either side) AND based on the picture and written prompts.
  • If you title your entry this is not counted in your word count.
  • Only one entry allowed (so make it count)
  • End each entry with word count and name/twitter handle (if you forget these REPLY TO YOUR OWN COMMENT with them before judging closes)
  • Monday 11am GMT is the expected closing time for entries BUT the competition will be open until I put a ‘competition closed’ comment so you may be able to slip something in (because I’m extra kind like that). Got that?

If you do not comply with these rules your story will be disqualified from judging. Good spelling and grammar will also help to make a better impression on judges – the odd typo, however, will be overlooked so please don’t worry about that.

For tips, read through the critiques from last week’s entries.

Winners!

There will be ONE OVERALL WINNER and THREE RUNNERS UP. After that there will be THREE CRITIQUES of three stories that didn’t make it.

It would also be nice to those participating if you could promote your fellow competitors and those who win.

Today’s Prompt!

The following may be used as a sentence in your story OR provide a basis for it:-

“interloping disaster”

And here is your picture prompt:

& good luck!

  1. This was the hottest ticket in town. I’d paid Jimmy McDonald all of my pocket money for this moment even though it meant I would have to go without my usual visit to corner shop on the way home.

Sherbet lemons strangely lost their sparkle compared to being here in this sweet smelling heaven.

Everyone said Jimmy’s big sister Nancy could be a model with those long legs and well turned out ankles, from my prominent position I swooned with delight at my private viewing.

Of course I couldn’t see much above her ankles but at her feet was a bounty of mesmerising girl stuff. Every few seconds a manicured hand would reach down carefully plucking the desired potion from the treasure.

It was unfortunate that the talcum powder caused me to sneeze.

Nancy gave me such a disapproving look.

“Mum, Jimmy’s fat friend is underneath my bed and I think he’s stuck!”

  2. Roxanne Revisited

Dressed in a gown showing her ample assets to best advantage, she concentrated on ensuring her makeup was perfect. Smoothing the powder onto her cheek, she absently noted the old song coming from the small bookshelf stereo. She froze in place, willing the tears not to come.

Yes, she did have to wear that dress tonight. She hated the men, hated the necessity of what she must do but her options had all fled. Her mother and siblings would not live without food, shelter and all of the other things that were so, so expensive. Anya did what she must…for them.

Sadly, while she truly did care if what she did was wrong or right, she would do it with no sentiment interloping, disaster to her family averted for at least one more day. Switching the stereo off, she swallowed her emotions and went out to sell her body (and her soul) to the night.

  3. “You really gonna do this?”

Bobby was sitting on the bed, wearing a dress. He’d shaved his arms and legs and put on makeup, including lipstick, blush and eyeshadow. Makeup littered the ground at his feet, which were in black high-heels.

“Dustin Hoffman pulled it off in Tootsie! I can pull it off tonight!”

“Dude, that was a movie!” I shook my head. “Where’d you get the wig?”

    “A shop downtown.”

    “Looks good on you.”

He stood up, and looked himself over in the mirror. “Yep. I’m ready.” He picked up his bag, showing off his painted nails. “Time to go.”

“I’ll post bail and pick you up when your interloping disaster reaches its end.”

And off he went to crash the girls’ night out.

I sat on the sofa, watched “The Man Show”, drank a beer and waited for him to call from jail.

  4. At what price for love?

Betty applied a little more blush, thinking back to when she'd asked Nana that same question. The face staring back at her from the vanity mirror didn't hold the beauty it had back then, not since the inverse relationship between age and health had taken over. A bit of lipstick now, darker than her liking. Now some eye shadow and light color around the eyes to hide the sunken appearance and loose skin.

Those old bones complained when Betty rose, but she didn't notice, and anyone who saw her that night commented how her eyes sparkled with youthful enthusiasm. Betty loved to dance, and for one last time she twirled and spun and kissed Harold under the moonlight.

The doctors scolded for taxing her body so, but Harold understood. This was love, not interloping disaster.

He asked before her last breath. "At what price for love?"

    Betty didn't hesitate.

    "Anything."

  5. Sarah clambered into the Church Shop window, clutching a pair of salad tongs and a plastic bag, whilst chuntering at Sue's attempt at window dressing.
“I said I'd be calling in after my leg waxing” she scolded stumbling across the dressing table detritus.
“Just why has she strewn the black feather boa around a flea-bitten cat-scratching pole?” Sarah had demanded Sue save it so she could try it on with the outfit she'd bought for her 'Strictly Cull the Seagulls Charity Event.' The Churchyard was growing a Guano coating thicker than the icing on the a Mary Berry carrot cake.
“I'll have to sterilise it before I try it on now,” she continued scathingly, stretching across the display with the tongs.
Across the street Sue was poised ready to capture her handiwork for the Parish magazine. The flash caught Sarah unawares.
“Oops, not just leg waxing then…” Sue sniggered.
